Membership

Students are nominated by a fellow medical student, a resident, or a staff member from Wayne State SOM or the DMC. Members are selected based on their demonstration of excellence in clinical care, leadership, and dedication to service, and consistently go beyond the call of duty to enrich the society in which we live by advancing the field of medicine and demonstrating compassion for all.

After notification of their nomination, candidates submit copies of their CV, paragraph essays in response to questions included in the application form, a letter of recommendation written by a physician with whom they have worked, and a records release form which will be used to confirm good standing. Applications will be blinded and selected by committees of GHHS members which include medical students, residents, and attending physicians.

Nominees should embody the following qualities:

  • Excellence in patient care and advocacy
  • Compassion for patients and their families
  • Professionalism and leadership among colleagues, students and staff
  • Commitment to teaching students
  • Devotion to promoting humanism in medicine through behavior and attitude

As with other professional organizations, the GHHS requires dues from its members. For students, there is a one time fee of $25 to be paid upon admission to the society. The fee for residents is $50, and the fee for faculty is $100.

HOW TO NOMINATE:  Any student, resident, or faculty member may nominate up to three people. Please write at least one thoughtful paragraph about why you choose to nominate this person and put the name and email address of the person you are nominating in the subject line of your email. Your name will be removed from the email and your nomination will become a part of their application, which is an important factor for selection. Please send your nominations to ghhswsu@gmail.com.

NOTE: Faculty members nominating students may wish to write a descriptive explanation as nomination. This summary will be used as a recommendation letter for that student's application.
